Taylor County residents with special needs can register to receive assistance during a disaster. A person with special needs is defined as someone who, during periods of evacuation either mandatory or voluntary, will require assistance that exceeds the basic level of care provided at the general population shelter, but will not require the level of skilled medical care provided at institutional facilities. A person with special needs is included in the vulnerable populations category.
Providing as much information as possible will allow emergency management officials to plan for future disasters. You will be e-mailed periodically to verify the information provided is correct and to make any necessary changes. Individual surveys will be archived after one year if not verified and facility surveys will be archived after six months if not verified.
You should know that completing the Florida Special Needs Registry does not automatically qualify an individual for a special needs shelter. Further screening will be conducted by our local health department. Transportation resources will probably be strained during times when Taylor County experiences a disaster. We strongly urge those individuals in the vulnerable populations make every effort to have family or friends aid in their care and transportation to either a special needs or general population shelter.
The information supplied for the Registry will be housed by the Florida Department of Emergency Management in a statewide database. Florida Statute 252.905 declares any information furnished by a person or business to the Florida Division of Emergency Management for the purpose of being provided assistance with emergency planning is exempt from F.S. 119.07 (1) and s. 24 (a), Art. I of the State Constitution.
